By Ray Francis, REALTOR®, Royal LePage In The Comox Valley
Comox is the seaside half of the Valley's twin towns. Where Courtenay has the river and the commercial core, Comox has the harbour, the marina, Filberg Park and a compact main street of cafés and shops on Comox Avenue. It is the kind of place where people walk to the Saturday market and watch the ferry come in from Powell River.
Neighbourhoods inside Comox
- Downtown and the Marina: older character homes and newer condos within walking distance of the harbour and Marina Park.
- Foxwood and Northeast Comox: newer subdivisions of family homes and townhomes near the schools and the base.
- Point Holmes and Kye Bay: oceanfront and ocean-view homes on the peninsula, with the sandy beach at Kye Bay a local secret in summer.
- Lazo and Little River: rural acreages and hobby farms on the north side, near Seal Bay Nature Park and the BC Ferries terminal.
19 Wing CFB Comox
The base is the town's largest employer and the reason so many families arrive on a posting message every summer. If you are one of them, Ray works with BGRS and knows how to make a house-hunting trip count. The base also shares its runway with the Comox Valley Airport, which has direct flights to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.
What homes cost
Comox generally prices a little above Courtenay for comparable homes, with oceanfront and view properties at the top of the Valley market. Condos and townhomes near the marina are the most affordable way into town. Live listings and the current median price for Comox are on the community page linked below.
Things to know
The peninsula has its own microclimate and more sun than the west side of the Valley. Some rural peninsula properties are on wells and septic, so budget time for inspections. And if a home backs onto the golf course or the base, ask Ray about noise and flight paths; he will give you a straight answer.
